THE JOURNEY MARGARET RIVER
About Mo, your Margaret River wine guide
I’m Mo, the owner of The Journey Margaret River. If you book a private wine tour with me, I am the person you speak with, plans your day, drives you through it and makes sure it feels relaxed, personal and well looked after.
My story
From food and wine to Margaret River
Out of school I trained as a chef while studying hospitality management and customer service, so food and looking after people have always been part of what I do.
My introduction to wine came in Courchevel, where I worked alongside the sommelier, changing the menu each week and building the pairings to match. That was where I learned to taste properly, and to understand why a wine and a plate work together rather than simply knowing that they do.
I first came to Australia to chase my love of bodyboarding, and Margaret River had everything I wanted in one place. The ocean, the surf, the forest, the climate and the wine. I stayed.
For three years I managed the cellar door at Redgate, talking about the region and its producers every day. That is where my knowledge of Margaret River wine really took shape. I have now lived here for fifteen years, and I have come to think of myself as an ambassador for this part of the world.
Wine knowledge built in the region
Years working in hospitality, managing a Margaret River cellar door and spending time with local producers.
Food background
Chef trained, with a strong understanding of flavour, produce, hospitality and wine pairing.
Local connection
Strong relationships across the local food and wine scene, which helps create a warmer and more personal day.
HOW I PLAN YOUR DAY
A relaxed day, planned properly
I am not a driver who has learned a few facts about wine. I am a chef and former cellar door manager who happens to drive you. That means your day is shaped by someone who understands the wine, the food it is served with, the people who make it and the small details that turn a good day into a memorable one.
Every itinerary is built around you. Some guests want structured tastings at well regarded estates. Others prefer smaller family wineries where you might meet the owners or winemakers themselves. Some want a long lunch with vineyard views, while others prefer a quicker pace across more stops.
I handle the bookings, timing, travel between venues and lunch planning, so you do not have to think about the logistics. I keep groups to a maximum of seven, with six being the most comfortable, so the day can move at your pace.
LIFE & TRUST
Local, accredited and easy to deal with
I live in Margaret River with my wife, Karen. When I am not working, you will usually find me doing the things that brought me here in the first place. A surf, a fish, a barbecue and a bottle or two of Chardonnay is about as good as a day off gets.
The Journey Margaret River is accredited for Quality Tourism, Sustainable Tourism and Ecotourism under EcoStar, and is fully authorised by the WA Department of Transport.
I answer enquiries personally and quickly, which guests often tell me they value from the first message. From the first email to the final drop off, the aim is simple. A relaxed, well planned day with someone who knows the region properly.
