DUNSBOROUGH TRAVEL GUIDE
A local guide to Dunsborough and the northern bays
Dunsborough sits at the northern end of the Margaret River wine region, close to calm bays, surf beaches, walking tracks and the wineries around Yallingup, Wilyabrup and Metricup.
I often think of it as one of the easiest bases in the region because you can be by the water in the morning, at a cellar door before lunch and back near town for dinner without feeling like you have spent the whole day in the car.

LOCATION AND DISTANCES
Where Dunsborough sits and getting around
Dunsborough is in the north of the Margaret River wine region, close to Geographe Bay, Cape Naturaliste and Yallingup. It works well as a base if you want to explore the beaches and coastal walks around the cape, while still being close enough to spend time at cellar doors.
From Dunsborough to the main Wilyabrup wine area, allow around 30 minutes. This part of the region includes many of the established vineyards and restaurants, so it is a practical area to visit from Dunsborough without a long drive.
From Dunsborough to Margaret River town, allow around 45 minutes. Margaret River town has more of a forest and main street feel, while Dunsborough is more connected to the bay and the northern beaches.
From Busselton Margaret River Airport to Dunsborough, allow around 45 minutes. From Perth, the drive to Dunsborough is usually around 3 hours, depending on traffic and where you leave from.
A car is useful in Dunsborough because the beaches, wineries, caves and lookouts are spread out. The town centre is easy enough for a coffee, casual meal or supplies, but most of the places people come here to see sit outside the centre.

ACCOMMODATION AREAS
Where to stay in Dunsborough
Dunsborough suits a few different styles of stay. The right area depends on whether you want to walk to town, stay close to the beach or have a quieter base outside the centre.
Close to town
Staying close to the town centre is the most convenient option if you want easy access to coffee, dinner and supplies. It makes evenings simple because you are not relying on the car for every small thing.
Near the bay
If the beach is the main reason for your trip, staying closer to the bay can work well. This side of Dunsborough suits slow mornings, swims, paddle boarding and relaxed family time.
Quieter outer areas
For a slower and quieter stay, the areas around Quindalup, Eagle Bay, Bunker Bay and the roads toward Yallingup can feel more tucked away. This part of the coast suits guests who want space, larger private homes and a calmer coastal feel, while still keeping the beach and northern wineries within easy reach.
Dunsborough is also a good base for groups because it gives people options. Some guests can spend the morning at the beach, others can visit galleries, breweries or wineries and everyone can meet back in town later.
COAST, WINE, FOOD AND WALKS
What to see and do in Dunsborough
Dunsborough is close to some of the most accessible coastal scenery in the region. The beaches around Geographe Bay are usually the gentler side of the coast, while the Cape Naturaliste and Yallingup side has more exposed ocean, surf, limestone, walking tracks and lookouts.
Beaches and bays
You can start the day somewhere calm and sheltered, especially around the gentler bays near Eagle Bay and Bunker Bay, where slow mornings and swimming are part of the appeal. From there, it is only a short drive to a wilder piece of coastline, which is one of the things I like about staying in Dunsborough.
Cape Naturaliste
The Cape Naturaliste area is worth leaving time for. It gives you access to coastal walks, whale watching in season, lighthouse views and several small beaches and bays.
Wineries nearby
Dunsborough sits within easy reach of the northern and central parts of the Margaret River wine region. You are close to the Yallingup and Wilyabrup areas, which makes it simple to visit a mix of established producers, smaller cellar doors and places with lunch options.
Food, walks and relaxed days
Food around Dunsborough tends to suit relaxed coastal travel. You can keep things simple with coffee, bakery stops and casual meals in town, or use Dunsborough as a base for winery lunches and longer afternoons out.
LOCAL PLANNING ADVICE
How I would plan a stay here
Dunsborough also works well for guests whose trip is not only about wine. Beaches, caves, Cape Naturaliste, Yallingup, short walks, farm style stops, breweries and scenic drives all sit within reach. That makes Dunsborough a strong base for mixed groups where some people want cellar doors and others would rather spend time by the coast.
The main thing I would avoid is trying to cover the whole Margaret River region in one day from Dunsborough. It is possible to drive south to Margaret River, Boranup, Hamelin Bay or Augusta, but those days need more planning.
If you only have a short stay, it is usually better to enjoy the northern end properly rather than spend too much of the day moving between places.
A LITTLE HELP
Getting a little help with planning
If you would rather not drive, I offer private tours across the region and can shape the day around where you are staying, what you like to drink and how much time you want by the coast.
For guests who already have lunch or tastings in mind, I also offer a local driver service across this part of the region.
I keep this kind of day flexible. Some guests want wineries and lunch, some want caves and beaches, and many want a gentle mix of both.
