Pinot Noir Lovers Guide to Margaret River

When people think of Margaret River, Pinot Noir is not usually the first wine that comes to mind. This coastal region is far better known for its powerful Cabernet Sauvignon and world class Chardonnay. But for those who love a lighter, more elegant red, there are a few hidden gems worth tracking down.

Pinot Noir prefers cool climates where grapes ripen slowly and retain their natural acidity. Much of Margaret River is a bit too warm for this finicky grape to thrive on a large scale. However, a few clever winemakers have found success in cooler vineyard pockets and sheltered sites. The result? Small batch Pinot Noir with bright fruit, soft tannins and a touch of savoury complexity, perfect for a more relaxed, refined tasting experience.

If you are keen to include Pinot on your wine day, here are some of our favourite producers.

Pinot Noir Lovers Guide to Margaret River

Moss Wood Pinot Noir

This is as close as it gets to a classic Burgundy style in Margaret River. Moss Wood’s site in Wilyabrup benefits from cooling coastal breezes and careful vineyard management, making their Pinot one of the most consistent and respected in the region. Expect structure, balance and a beautiful mix of cherry fruit, spice and earthy elegance.

Victory Point Pinot Noir

Victory Point is a boutique producer crafting wines with real attention to detail. Their Pinot is elegant, refined and only made in small quantities. Grown in a cooler part of the region, it offers red berry fruit, subtle oak and a savoury finish. This is a true hidden gem and well worth a visit.

Howard Park Flint Rock Pinot Noir

While some of the fruit for this wine comes from Great Southern, it is still a favourite among visitors to Margaret River. Flint Rock Pinot is vibrant and polished, with fresh red fruits and a silky texture. It is a great introduction to the variety and a popular choice for those new to Pinot.

Walsh and Sons Westside Pinot Noir

This small producer is known for keeping things fun without losing focus on quality. The Westside Pinot is juicy and bright with a bit of wild charm. There is just enough savoury edge to keep things interesting. If you like your wines with personality, this one’s for you.

Peacetree Pinot Noir

Peacetree is a relaxed, family owned winery that does Pinot in a soft and easy style. It is light, fresh and easy to enjoy, especially on a warm day or with a plate of food. The setting in Cowaramup is peaceful and the welcome is always genuine. A great option for those looking for something unpretentious and delicious.
