5 Southern Margaret River Wineries You Haven’t Tried Yet
If you have visited Margaret River before, chances are you’ve already enjoyed the well known wineries from Yallingup to Margaret River town. But travel a little further south and you’ll find a cooler, quieter, more intimate side of the region where passionate winemakers, unique styles and peaceful cellar doors are waiting to be discovered.
From Rosa Glen to Karridale, the southern end of the Margaret River wine region is not only where most of the forests and caves are, it is ideal for those returning for a second or third trip and looking for something different. Here are five southern Margaret River wineries that deserve a place on your next itinerary.
1. Mr Barval Fine Wines – Redgate
For a personal, handcrafted wine experience Mr Barval is a top pick. Specialising in European inspired styles with minimal intervention, this small vineyard produces exceptional Chardonnay, Nebbiolo and more. The cellar door is perched on a hill with sweeping views and tastings are by appointment, perfect for a peaceful, thoughtful experience.
2. McHenry Hohnen – Witchcliffe
South of town, McHenry Hohnen has earned a reputation for its biodynamic vineyards and honest, expressive wines. Their Syrah, Hazel’s Vineyard Chardonnay and Teroldego are consistently praised and the cellar door team are warm, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about what they do. A great stop for those interested in sustainability and small batch excellence.
3. Flowstone Wines – Forest Grove
Tucked into the Forest Grove hills, Flowstone is a boutique label focused on detail and texture. Winemaker Stuart Pym creates elegant, site driven wines with clarity and character. I think they might be the only place in the region to make a Gewurztraminer, but I could be wrong. Appointments are essential and the intimate nature of the experience makes it ideal for returning visitors.
A working farm, vineyard and restaurant rolled into one, Glenarty Road is as much about the food as the wine. Expect vibrant Pet Nats, experimental blends and seriously good lunches made with ingredients grown right there on the property. It’s a lively, rustic spot that celebrates the connection between land, food and wine in the best way possible.
For something a little wild, Si Vintners offers a raw and honest take on Margaret River wine. With a focus on natural, low-intervention winemaking, their wines are full of personality, think cloudy whites, textural reds and bold blends that challenge the norm. The vineyard feels wonderfully off-grid and the laid-back tastings are a favourite among those looking to explore the region’s edgier side.
